ADHD and Dopamine

Dopamine is an important chemical in our brain that helps us feel motivated and happy. It also plays a crucial role in our inherent reward system, helping us feel motivated to do certain things over again. Recent research has shown that dopamine is different in people with ADHD. Understanding the connection between ADHD and  dopamine is important in helping people manage symptoms and feel better overall. Today, we’ll discuss what dopamine is, the connection between ADHD and dopamine, and ways you can naturally increase dopamine levels.

What Is Dopamine?

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, or a chemical, that sends messages to parts of the brain to keep your body and mind functioning properly. Many people refer to dopamine as the “feel-good” chemical in the brain because it helps us with:

  • Mood regulation: feelings of joy, satisfaction, and motivation.
  • Cognitive functions: such as attention, memory, and problem-solving skills.
  • Reward and reinforcement: Dopamine is released during situations and activities we find joy in, reinforcing the desire to do them again.

A healthy balance of dopamine is important and some researchers discuss the connection between ADHD and dopamine.

The Connection Between ADHD and Dopamine

When it comes to ADHD, parts of the brain (called cortical regions) that are used for attention, impulse control, and the ability to integrate stimulus not functioning at their best.

This causes people to:

  • Feel overloaded with stimuli
  • Have difficulty filtering background noise
  • Have trouble focusing, concentrating, or completing a task.1

Researchers have also found that people with ADHD have lower levels of dopamine and/or it doesn’t circulate through the brain like it does in people without ADHD.

For some people with ADHD, increasing dopamine is a way to try to manage symptoms. There are many benefits to increasing dopamine levels naturally.

Benefits of Maintaining Healthy Dopamine Levels

Keeping dopamine levels balanced can help your mental, physical, and emotional health. Some benefits include:

  • Improved mood: balanced dopamine levels help keep mood regulated and may reduce the risk of depression and anxiety.
  • Increased motivation and focus: dopamine boosts motivation and enhances focus, helping you be more productive and achieve your goals.
  • Increased positive behaviors: Healthy dopamine levels reinforce positive behaviors, making it easier to establish and maintain healthy habits.

Healthy, balanced levels of dopamine can be beneficial in managing ADHD symptoms as well. Next, we’ll talk about ways you can do this naturally.

5 Ways To Naturally Increase Dopamine

There are quite a few lifestyle changes that can help you naturally boost your dopamine levels.

Here are five simple ones to get started.

Increase tyrosine in your diet

Eating a healthy diet that includes lean protein, healthy fats (like Omega 3’s), and essential vitamins and minerals helps with overall brain health.  Increasing tyrosine, an important building block of protein, can support dopamine production.

Foods that you can add to your diet that contain tyrosine are:

  • Lean proteins: Chicken, turkey, and lean beef
  • Fish: Salmon and other fatty fish
  • Dairy products: Milk, cheese, and yogurt, eggs
  • Soy products: Tofu, tempeh, and soy milk
  • Nuts and seeds: Almonds, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds

Get some sun and spend time in nature

This can be a fairly simple lifestyle change to make and it can be easy to do with kids. Spending time outside helps you feel relaxed and reduces stress.  Sunshine helps you get more vitamin D and can help your mood. All of these things can naturally increase dopamine.2

It doesn’t need to be a bright sunny day to reap the benefits. Simply spending time in any natural light can help:

  • Increase your motivation
  • Improve your Mood
  • Increase productivity
  • Improve sleep-wake cycles

Sleep

Quality sleep is important for maintaining healthy dopamine levels. During sleep, the body is in a rest and relaxation state. But sleep helps your body perform important maintenance tasks, including the regulation of neurotransmitters.

This can help:

  • Replenish dopamine levels leading to improved mood and alertness.
  • Enhanced brain function: proper rest supports cognitive functions like memory, attention, and problem-solving.
  • Keep moods stable: consistent sleep patterns help stabilize mood and reduce stress.

Reduce stress with gratitude

Working to reduce stress in any way can help lower cortisol levels in the brain, which can increase dopamine production. Mindfulness practices play an important role in stress reduction and research shows that incorporating gratitude into these practices is really helpful.

The best thing about starting a gratitude practice is that it can take as little as five minutes. For older kids and adults, you can write down 3-5 things a day that you’re grateful for.

If you have smaller kids, you can talk with them about what they are grateful for. You can do this before bed or even during a family meal. During meals, your family can go around the table so everyone can discuss what they’re grateful for. It can be a great way to start – or end – the day.

Incorporating gratitude or any mindfulness practice into your daily routine helps:

  • Regulate dopamine
  • Lower cortisol levels
  • Improve focus and attention
  • Regulate emotions
  • Enhance overall well-being

Try something new

As humans, we love to stay in our comfort zone. For some people, trying something new isn’t easy but learning something new and setting simple, realistic goals can help increase dopamine. This is because you’re feeling a sense of accomplishment and dopamine is linked to our brain’s reward system. You feel accomplished then dopamine increases, encouraging you to continue accomplishing goals so you can get that feeling again.

Boosting your dopamine levels naturally can lead to significant improvements in mood, motivation, and overall well-being. Brain training can also help promote behaviors that help increase dopamine.

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a brain training tool that helps promote activities that naturally boost dopamine levels.

Neurofeedback helps:

  • Promote healthy sleep habits
  • Promote stress management
  • Improve mental acuity and focus
  • Enhance learning capacity
  • Reduce sports and performance anxiety
  • Promote overall brain health and fitness

Many people who use neurofeedback report better sleep, and feeling more calm and relaxed. This helps you to better manage stress and even become more flexible and resilient. With increased flexibility and resilience, you’re able to be more mindful, feel more gratitude, and participate more fully in all the above activities that help increase dopamine naturally.

The best part about neurofeedback is that it helps bring you back to the present moment. In a world full of distractions and overstimulation – this is so important.

Anyone can benefit from these lifestyle changes that increase dopamine production but for anyone with ADHD, starting with these small daily habits might help your overall mood and help you feel more motivated to complete tasks at work or school.
